ETFs in Insurance General Accounts

The use of ETFs by insurance companies continued to increase at a consistent pace. In 2020, the use grew by 18% over 2019. Fueled by $4 billion in new flows, the use of Fixed Income ETFs increased 52%. This year we started analyzing trading of ETFs by insurance companies. Companies traded $63 billion in 2020. And, relative to holdings, they traded twice as much Fixed Income ETFs and Equity ETFs.
