Screening: Peer Analysis

Conducting a peer analysis? Trying to find new prospects? Compiling a list of companies that have debt maturing in 2 years’ time? Searching for Investors?



Screening offers thousands of criteria to search for companies. There are 2 ways to add criteria:

1. Search Bar
Use the search box at the top of the page to enter a key word, select the relevant item and click on the open criterion.



2. Widget Link
If you do not know the exact term you are searching for, you can browse through the criteria widgets which are organized by categories. Refer to the appendix for definitions at the end of the page.



Example 1: I want to see private companies in Australia that are in the industrials sector and have a reported total assets of at least $500 million AUD.

a. Type private company in the search bar and click on open criterion. You can add other types such as investment firms, private funds etc. Click add criteria.



b. Add the location by searching for Australia in the search bar, click on open criterion and add criteria.

c. Add the location by searching for industrials in the search bar, click on open criterion and select if you want to search by primary industries only before adding criteria.



d. For total assets, you can either search for it in the search bar or look for it in the balance sheet section in financial statements, under the financial information column. After selecting total assets, on the right under the criteria tab set the value to greater than or equal to 500. You may also choose the period you want to get the total assets from.



*The currency depends on your settings but you can change it by expanding currency options.

e. Click add criteria then view results to see your list of companies.

Example 2: I want to pull the top 50 companies trading on the ASX, ranked by market capitalization as of 7/31/2019.

a. Click on exchanges under equity details, locate ASX then click the > arrow to move it to selected items. Set ‘this criterion describes…’ to primary listings to only see companies that are primarily trading under the exchange. Click add criteria.



b. Click on stock performance/volume under financial information, expand stock price/volume and select market capitalization from the list. As we’re looking for the top performers, select the rank tab, set the time frame to 7/31/2019, group by absolute rank and set it to less than or equal to 50.



c. Click Add Criteria then View Results.

FAQs:

Q: I only want to see the results at aggregate level
A: Select Aggregates to see the average, maximum, minimum and total value.



Q: I want to use the screening results as my prospect list
A: Save the results as a watch list. You can then use these companies to set up alerts, create a custom index and even feature them on your homepage.



To do this click the drop down, select current page, click on save to list then choose watch list and create new. Assign a name for your portfolio and click save.



Q: I might need to revisit this screen in the future, can I save what was built?



Save as new screen allows you to save for later use. It also can be shared with colleagues in your group or firm. Click on saved screen to retrieve the defined criteria.



APPENDIX

Criteria Groups:
  • Company Details: Screen for qualitative data points such as Industry Classification, Geographies, State of Incorporation, Country of Incorporation, Business Description Keywords, Products, Company Type/Status, Private Ownership History, Company Statistics, Index/Exchange Constituents, Most Recent Auditor, or Analyst Coverage.
  • Financial Information and Formula Builder: Screen for quantitative data points including Financial Statement line-items, Valuation and Trading Multiples, Operating Metrics and Ratios, Estimates, Stock Performance, or any Custom Data Points or Formulas you create. You also have the ability to rank a company against its own history (Intra-Company Ranking) or against other companies (Inter-Company Ranking).
  • Fixed Income Securities: Screen for Fixed Income Securities based on Dates, Valuation, Security Types, Seniority, Coupon Details,, or Covenants
  • Equity Details: Screen for a company's equity listings based on High/Low Pricing Dates, Initial Trading or Dividend Dates, Security Features, Exchanges, Indices, or Dividends.
  • Corporate Actions: Screen for Investment/Transaction History, Bankruptcies, or Filings.
  • Takeover Defenses: Screen for Takeover Defenses and Statistics, Corporate Governance, or State Laws.
  • Company Ownership: Screen for Public Company Ownership, Insider Ownership or Trading Activity, or Public Holders.
  • Holdings/Investments: Screen for data on Public Holdings by Entire Portfolio, by Industry, by Geographic Location, or by Market Capitalization.
  • Key Developments: Screen for significant news events by Keyword or Situation Type.
  • Investment Criteria: Screen for financial sponsors' stated investment preferences such as Industries of Interest, Geographies of Interest, Bite Sizes, Stages of Interest, or Fund information.
  • List Management: Screen against any list(s) you have previously created in S&P Capital IQ to focus your search on a certain universe of companies. It also allows you to Screen individual companies.
  • Person Details, Compensation/Ownership, and Education: Screen for professionals by Biography Keywords, Age, Location, Compensation or Ownership Holdings, Academic Degrees, Graduation Years, Schools, or Majors.
  • Employment/Board: Screen for professionals by Job Function, Professional Type, Title, or Specialty.
  • Analyst Coverage: Screen by Contributor to see companies covered.
  • Targeting Engine: Screen for Financial and/or Strategic Buyers or for Limited Partners. Please visit the Features for further detail on the targeting engines.
  • General Transaction Details: Screen by Transaction Dates, Deal Descriptions, Types, Status, Features, or Valuations.
  • M&A/Buyback, Private Placement, Spin-off/Split-off, and Public Offerings: Screen for deal-specific features under these four categories of transactions.
  • Bankruptcies: Screen by Bankruptcy specific data.
  • LCD: Screen for bank loan information.
  • Project/Portfolio Screening: Screen for projects and portfolios you've created based on status, dates, associated companies and professionals, fees, characteristics, and more. Build reports on project activity, pipelines, or portfolios.
