Launch of the global data-based comparable index of global container port performance

Global container ports enjoyed generally improved operational performance in 2023 as they embarked on a path of recovery following the congestion and supply chain disruption of the previous years. For many ports, technical innovation; policy reform; port sustainability, and addressing infrastructure gaps were front and center over the course of the year.

However, delays and congestion were never far from mind as labour issues, weather events, cyberattacks and eventually the impacts of the ongoing Red Sea situation ensured that operational disruption was a constant threat in most world regions.

As the first full index without a significant impact from the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) provides a welcome picture of global port performance in an undeniably complex but also more normalized context.

Developed by the Transport Global Practice of the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, the CPPI is a comparable index of global container port performance. It is a critical reference point for key stakeholders in the global economy, including national governments, port authorities, development agencies and private organizations engaged in trade, logistics and supply chain services.

The CPPI and its underlying data support the identification of gaps and opportunities for improvement in port operations and is intended to stimulate a dialogue among key stakeholders.
